At Secto Design, we are committed to leading the way in sustainable lighting, basing our actions on verified data and openly sharing the environmental impact of our operations. As part of this commitment, we have conducted a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for all our products, which forms the foundation of our first Sustainability report.
Building on the insights from the LCA, we are proud to announce the publication of our first Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), for the Octo 4240 and the Octo Small 4241 pendant lamps.
EPDs provide transparent, comparable, and third-party verified data about a product's environmental performance across its lifecycle. They enable architects, designers, and other professionals to make informed decisions by comparing the environmental impact of different products.
Our Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are downloadable in PDF format from the International EPD System's online library (www.environdec.com). The EPDs for the remaining Secto Design lamp models will be published in the coming months.
Among the many metrics present in our EPDs, the total Global Warming Potential (GWP total) is one of the most telling. It measures the greenhouse gas emissions associated with a product throughout its lifecycle, expressed in carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e), including gases such as carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), and nitrous oxide (N₂O).
The total GWP of both the Octo and Octo Small pendant lamps is negative – from “cradle to gate” – meaning their production process removes more greenhouse gases than it emits before they leave our factory.
While the initial stages of the lifecycle are carbon-negative, the total GWP over the entire lifecycle of these lamps —“cradle to grave”— is primarily influenced by the user phase. This phase is largely dependent on energy consumption, which varies according to the user's choices and is beyond our control.
To put it simply, the Octo and Octo Small pendant lamps are carbon-negative when they leave our factory in Heinola, Finland. However, their overall environmental impact during use depends on the energy sources chosen by the end user.
Sharing our EPDs reflects our firm commitment to sustainability, transparency, and empowering our clients to make environmentally responsible choices. We invite you to explore our EPDs and join us in illuminating our interiors in a more sustainable way!
